Today is a little twist: We have 2 Special Guests on Inside the Party House! Pamela Smerker and Dawn Rumin of D&P Celebrations! How neat to to have co-founders of the great business both share with us today.. We have lots to chat about today, so let’s get right to it……
Dawn: In 1996 shortly after the birth of her first child, Dawn became interested in paper crafting. She began with card making and within a few short years ventured into the scrapbooking world. In 2006 Dawn started teaching paper crafting class which led to design positions for paper crafting companies. In 2009, Dawn started venturing into digital scrapbooks, blogging, graphic arts and party styling.
Dawn was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Colorado where she resides with her husband, Chris and their two daughters. She loves a Starbucks iced white mocha at least once a week, shopping with her friends and girls, baking, anything to remind her of her trip to London and the color red.

This popularity led her to positions as designer for several paper crafting companies and inspirational sites. In 2009 Pamela entered the “party world” with her custom mini favor boxes. In 2011 her talents expanded into photography, graphic arts and party styling. Pamela now spends her time with her friend and business partner, Dawn Rumin creating custom stationary, party printables as well as custom mini favor boxes for their new online store at D & P Celebrations.
Pamela was born in Iowa and grew up in Colorado where she resides with her husband, Al and their three children. She loves Starbucks’ mocha frappuccinos, thrift shopping, baking and the color green.

What is your business? Party Printables / Paperie
What three things/people have contributed most to your success?
DAWN: 1. My amazing and talented partner, Pam! 2. My wonderful and amazing husband, he is so very supportive! 3. Not being afraid to try and make my passion into something real!
PAMELA: Family is number one for sure, without them I wouldn’t be where I am . Second is my best friend Dawn, she constantly inspires me. Three, determination and passion to do what I love everyday.
For a woman (or anyone starting their own business), what three things are most critical for them to be aware of?
DAWN: The amount of time you spend on your business needs to be realistic, you can’t do it all 24/7.
Figure out your budget, and stick to it! Everyone wants to trade product for publicity, but once you hit your limit, you have to say no. Collaborations are great, but make sure you follow through with what you commit to and try to collaborate with those who do the same!
PAMELA: Budget, Balance and Be YOU!
Why did you choose your career/business?
DAWN & PAMELA: We chose to start our business, because we are passionate about the products we create. We love going to work everyday and believe it or not by the time the weekend is over, both of us are in work withdrawal!
What is your biggest personal achievement to date?
DAWN: Going into this business with Pam has been a huge achievement for me, I knew I believed in her and her vision, just had to start believing in myself to help grow this passion of ours!
PAMELA: Finally finding balance in my personal and work life. I used to feel that if I didn’t check emails or social media sites every minute of everyday that I would miss out on something. The fact is, emails and Facebook could wait and be check on during regular work hours. After that it was my time to focus on my family. By finally realizing this, I have avoided much stress and feelings of guilt.
If you knew then what you know now, what would you tell your 18-year-old self?
DAWN: Believe in yourself and your dreams, don’t ever give up!
PAMELA: Believe in yourself…PERIOD!
How do you define success?
DAWN: Getting to do what I love, and share it with everyone, getting paid to do it is a bonus!
PAMELA: Success to me is, being able to create, inspire and share products that I love. Making a profit off of those items is a nice bonus!
What “rules” do you live by?
DAWN: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and everything happens for a reason!
PAMELA: If you aren’t happy then make changes until you are. Change is good! Also learn from mistakes. We all make them and learning from them helps you grow.
Where do you find your best inspiration?
DAWN: Everywhere! Sometimes it is while shopping, a cake at the store will catch my eye and I snap a pic with my phone (always with me) or a color combo of an outfit I see. I am ALWAYS inspired by Pam, she is my muse
PAMELA: I find inspiration everywhere, in nature, while shopping, and online. My iPhone is my best friend, I am constantly taking pictures of things that inspire me while I am out and about. Whether it’s a cake at the store, and outfit my daughter is wearing or a bug on the sidewalk. Inspiration is everywhere!
What has been the worst piece of advice you’ve been given?
DAWN: Wow, I can’t think of anything I have been told that has been bad advice!
PAMELA: WOW I can’t think of any, so I guess I am lucky.
What is your secret indulgence?
DAWN: No secret, Iced White Chocolate Mocha with 2 pumps of Cinnamon Dolce from Starbucks, with whipped cream!!!!
PAMELA: It’s not really a secret…Starbucks Mocha frappuccinos are my thing.
Tell us one thing about you that we don’t know about that might surprise everyone?

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or deceased, who would it be and why?
DAWN: The Queen of England, I am infatuated with British history and culture and would love to see it all first hand.
PAMELA: I would love to have dinner with my late grandpa Harvey. He left the world when I was 20 years old. I would love the chance to be able to thank him for sharing his work ethic with me. He built a house by himself when he was in his 60′s and he worked almost until the day he died of colon cancer when he was 78 years old.
